WHAT IS BRAZILIAN ZOUK ?
Zouk what?! Brazilian Zouk is a style of partner dance that inspired me to start this blog and business journey.
Its roots are in Lambada, a style native to Brazil. When Lambada music stopped being produced the moves were adapted to Zouk, a style of music from the French Caribbean. Jaime Aroxa, Renata Peçanha and Adilio Porto at Jaime Aroxa Dance School Rio de Janeiro were key to this adaptation. Zouk has evolved a lot over the last few decades and now and takes many forms and styles. Some of my faves include Contemporary (very connected and smooth – Check out this Xandy & Evelyn demo for an example), Neo (created by Mafie Zouker and is more dynamic and kind of danced to trance music – like this demo), and Urban (danced to RnB / urban music like this demo by Aline and Charles). Zouk is particularly awesome because you can dance to most top 40 tunes with an 8×8 beat. Or – even better – check out DJ Kakah and Mafie Zouker for their original Brazilian Zouk mixes.
But the best thing about Brazilian Zouk? It allows you to connect with yourself. It allows you to connect with another person as two human beings. And it lets you connect to music and that basic, human instinct to move your body. Just check this clip by Brenda and Anderson out and you might start to understand how profound this can be.
